About Ethiopia Coffee Beans

Ethiopia coffee Beans are renowned in coffee consumption circles as being the original coffee beans. The secret to the coffee connoisseur is that when roasted correctly with the right acidity level, Ethiopian coffee beans take on a similar flavour profile to that of a fine wine. And most importantly, Ethiopia is the birthplace of the Arabica plant.

Stretching back in time thousands of years, coffee consumption in Ethiopia and other parts of Africa has a long and storied history. It’s safe to say that this is the true birthplace of coffee culture, along with various regions across South America.

Legend has it that coffee was first discovered in the region of Kaffa way back in 850 AD by an Ethiopian goat herder patrolling the foothills. So, it’s safe to say that coffee beans from Ethiopia are a world-first!

Fast-forward several centuries and you’ll still see Ethiopians consuming Ethiopian coffee beans from a traditional clay pot, known as a Djibena, in special Ethiopian coffee ceremonies.

With a sharp tang yet offset by a warm citrus profile and mouthfeel thanks to a light-bodied roast, coffee beans from Ethiopia is a real treat!

At Coffee Beans Shop Australia, we have a commitment to sourcing the best Ethiopian coffee beans and coffee from Ethiopia, sourced from reputable suppliers and farmers.

Coffee Beans Shop sources only the best Ethiopia coffee beans, Sidamo Grade 100% Arabica, which are the most popular due to their freshness and overall sweetness.

Growing

Growing Ethiopia Coffee Beans

Ethiopian coffee is carefully cultivated in mountainside farms, also commonly known as Fincas, at soaring elevations of 1500 and 2200 metres. This equates to roughly 5000-7200 feet above sea level.

Besides the Sidamo region, which we favour here at Coffee Beans Shop Australia, Ethiopia coffee beans are also grown across other agriculturally rich regions such as Limu, Harrar and Yirgacheffe.

Originally growing natively across sparse, dry landscapes at the above sea levels, these bright evergreen shrubs produced the humble coffee cherry, a true sight to behold with its lustrous blood red glow. Within each cherry two beans are surrounded by a thick membrane and sugary pulp.

Coffee Beans Shop’s Ethiopia coffee beans are Sidamo, and some of the growing characteristics are as follows:

  • Washed or wet process Ethiopian coffee beans, which are dried in raised beds and carefully monitored to thrive in the most diverse growing conditions.
  • Sidamo comes from a native Arabica Heirloom Ethiopian variety, one of the most ancient and historic coffee plants in the world.
  • Sidamo Ethiopia coffee beans are grown at heights up to 2.5km above sea level.
Production & Harvesting

Harvesting Ethiopia Coffee Beans

As with any coffee beans from any part of the globe, quality can vary. The general consensus with Ethiopia coffee beans is that those who practice the traditional growing, processing and harvesting methods tend to still produce the best coffee beans from Ethiopia to this day.

The quality of coffee beans always has a significant impact on its price in the global coffee bean market. Coffee beans from Ethiopia place high on overall coffee production market as Ethiopia is the world’s fifth largest producer of 100% Arabica coffee beans.

Despite being a several thousand-year-old practice, coffee beans from Ethiopia still undergo strict processing, testing and quality control methods to ensure a continual premium grade product suitable for global export.
